Launch party

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

Celebrated the launch of BlueBoomerang.com, Haymarket's new directory website, at a fabulous party at Debenham House, 8 Addison Road, London W14 8DJ. What a mansion! It was covered, inside and out, in opalescent blue-green tiles and it was utterly beautiful. The entrance hall was domed and had a ceiling covered ...

Welcome to Haymarket

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

Had my Welcome To Haymarket reception in the boardroom today. Then we had a nice lunch laid on: mushroom risotto, tomato and pine nut salad, green salad, smoked salmon and non-alcoholic drinks.

Queen’s Head

Friday, May 26th, 2006

Damn, the British drink a lot. But they're generous drinkers, I'll give them that. I haven't paid for a drink since I started work at Haymarket. Whenever the sales team go out, the managers buy me gin and lemonades. It's rather a good thing when you're a skint Australian trying ...

Pub

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

Went to the pub with the sales team last night, a very smoky pub call The Queen in Hammersmith. Had a couple of Coronas bought for me and had a good chat with everyone. Most people only started recently, like me. Today I'm off shopping for a business suit. Everyone ...

New job

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

Wonderful first day at my new job. The first 4 days are going to be spent in sales training, and after today I can say that it's quite the best sales training I've ever had, and I've done uni level marketing courses. The teacher was simply wonderful - experienced, personable, ...

Job

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

I didn't bomb the interview. I've got the job! :-) Actually, I was offered 3 jobs in the end. A customer service job in Corby, a government office admin temp job and a sales job at Haymarket, the magazine publisher. I took the publishing job. I start next Wednesday. I can't ...

Watch stopped

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

Amazing combination of bad luck this morning. I slept badly because of a bad cold, but worse, my watch stopped, and I didn't realise because everything in the house was covered over with dust sheets because the double glazers were in. I thought it was just past 9, until I ...

Going Postal

Monday, May 8th, 2006

I'm reading Going Postal by Terry Pratchett in between e-mailing referees, applying for jobs, doing phone interviews and taking calls from companies. Going Postal is terrific. It's wonderful how Pratchett can write so imaginatively and observantly, yet cram in so many bad puns at once. I'd love to write like that.

Where the bloody hell are they?

Saturday, May 6th, 2006

Dad told me there was an article in the Sydney Morning Herald that was very relevant to my situation right now. Here it is! From The Sydney Morning Herald: Where the bloody hell are they? It seems most of them are in Britain. Australia's movers and shakers are ensuring the ties between the ...

Computer tests

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Had 3 interviews today and my Microsoft Office Suite and typing skills were tested for the first time. I'm very pleased with my results. I scored 80-100% for Word, Excel and Access, which was 20-30 percentage points above average, making me an advanced user. I can type 60 words per ...

Meat, affairs and Corby

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006

7.30pm: So much for being a vegetarian. I just cooked... Oops, East Enders is on. I wonder if the affair will be discovered? 9.00pm Jane's affair wasn't discovered in East Enders. Then Chaz and I saw a very good, though gory, hospital soap. The gore wasn't really necessary. They'd show the surgeons ...

First Interview

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

Got my first job interview. 10am Monday with Inspired Selection, a publisher recruitment agency. Wish me luck! Edit: got another interview request minutes later. Good to have such quick responses. Today I've been phoning and e-mailing recruitment agencies, and applying directly for jobs. Copies of my CV have been flying around like ...

Typing Speed Test

Wednesday, February 8th, 2006

Here's a free typing speed test. My best result is 71 words per minute with an accuracy of 99 percent.

A Cold in Summer

Friday, January 27th, 2006

I've got a lousy cold. Went to bed at 6pm Wednesday night and was too sick to get out of bed yesterday, which was a pity because it was Australia Day. Watched the fireworks from bed. Still feeling crook today. I'm supposed to go out for lunch with the Bennetts ...

Xmas preparation

Friday, December 23rd, 2005

My first day of holidays. I spent today preparing for Xmas, tidying the house (finally cleared out my cupboards) and wrapping presents. Now I'm sipping a Chai (Joanne gave me Chai syrup for Xmas and it's fantastic) and catching up on my e-mails in a clean room. Lovely. :-)

Trip to Brisbane and Adelaide

Tuesday, October 4th, 2005

Off to Brisbane and Adelaide on a work trip. Won't be back until Sunday night.

Oysters Afresh

Monday, October 3rd, 2005

Hot and gorgeous spring day. Had a picnic at Arney's Beach with Chris, Belinda and Fiona today. There were at least 5 yachts moored at the beach, so it wasn't as quiet as it was last time I was there, but we still had a good time. Fiona looked for ...

Diet

Saturday, July 9th, 2005

I spent the last week at a history conference. It was very enjoyable and successful. I chatted with plenty of authors and editors. This diet I'm on is entering my dreams. I made some new friends from another publisher during the conference and last night I dreamed that they kept offering ...

Puddle

Thursday, June 30th, 2005

The ceiling's leaking at work. I was just down on my hands and knees mopping up the puddle with a dishcloth. Some bugger has taken the mop. At least this rain is falling on the dam.

GPSmap 60CS

Saturday, June 4th, 2005

I've been enjoying my new birthday present, a GPSmap 60CS. I haven't been able to upload geocaching waypoints to it yet, because the waypoint software it comes with only works with Windows, but the store I bought it from uploaded the Australia map software for me so at least I ...
